This Month in MDCC Athletics
Trojan Supporters,
As we head down the stretch run of the 2020 Fall semester, I want to give you an update on all things related to MDCC athletics. On the academic side, our students have just a few weeks remaining in their classwork, with exams taking place on all campuses on Nov. 23-25. This will conclude the fall semester, with the spring semester beginning on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021.
The 2020 football season has been unusual, to say the least. At the time of this letter, the Trojans have only had the opportunity to play one game, which took place on Oct. 9 and was a loss for MDCC at the hands of Northeast Community College. There have been a number of schedule changes related to COVID-19, as two conference opponents and the Trojans themselves have had to quarantine for two-week periods at various times throughout the fall.
Here is a look at the updated remaining schedule, after the numerous cancellations and switch-arounds. Our annual Homecoming game is just two days from now, and although things will be much different this season, we would still love to see our Trojan supporters on Saturday!
Nov. 7 NORTHWEST (2 p.m. – Homecoming)
Nov. 12 @Coahoma (6:30 p.m.)
Nov. 19 @Northwest (7 p.m. – Makeup date from week one cancellation)
Nov. 25 HOLMES (6 p.m.)
Our men's and women's basketball teams will soon be putting the finishing touches on the fall off-season practice period, as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national office mandated a 60-consecutive calendar day practice session. The Lady Trojans recently traveled to East Central Community College for a day's worth of scrimmages, while the Trojans headed to Booneville and Northeast Community College for a double dip. The competitive season will get underway for both teams on Wednesday, Jan. 20, and we will soon be releasing the final 2021 schedule once the go-ahead is given from the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) league office.
The MDCC baseball team recently completed their mandated six weeks of fall practice, and ended the fall on a high note. The Trojans had two dates of outside competition, one at Sports Force Parks in Vicksburg and the other at Delta State University in Cleveland. To end the fall session, the team split into two teams and played the annual Fall World Series, which was won by the Green Sweepers. The team will now transition into a short off-season phase filled with strength and conditioning, as well as skill work, before heading into the semester break.
The Trojan softball team wrapped up the fall practice period on Halloween, as they welcomed Holmes Community College and the Arkansas Havoc to the Carl and Brenda Grubb Complex for a full day's worth of action. MDCC also traveled to Southwest Community College and Blue Mountain College for their other two dates against outside competition. Much like the baseball team, the softballers will head into a short off-season period filled with strength and conditioning exercises, and combined with limited skill work to wrap up the semester.
For the time being, our fan capacity remains at 25%, per the Governor's policy. This puts us at having approximately 500 open seats for our upcoming home football games. We will keep you posted on the availability of tickets as soon as possible, as well as letting you know the league office's mandate regarding capacity for our basketball games once this information becomes available.
As always, if you are unable to attend our events live, you can follow us on our official athletics Twitter and Facebook (@MDCCAthletics) or watch our events via livestream on our YouTube channel. As always, please visit our athletics website at MDCCTrojans.com.
Thank you for all of your support during these trying times!
Sincerely,
Dan Rives, MDCC Athletic Director
