Trojans set for round two vs. Rangers

The Mississippi Delta Community College football team will head to Senatobia to take on Northwest Community College on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in a contest will pit the Trojans against an opponent that they played less than two weeks ago.

In the first revision of the 2020 schedule, MDCC was set to open at East Mississippi Community College. The Lions, however, chose not to compete during the 2020 season, so the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) made the necessary adjustments. All of the North division teams were then forced to take on another North team twice, in a home and away series with these games spaced at least two weeks apart. This opponent for MDCC is Northwest, which gave both teams the opportunity to try and have a six-game schedule.

The last time the two teams met, it was Northwest who come away with a 26-9 victory over MDCC on Nov. 7 in Moorhead.

MDCC (0-3) is coming off a tough 17-13 loss at the hands of Coahoma Community College on Nov. 12, and are looking to get off the schneid with their first victory of 2020.

Northwest is currently 4-0 after a 41-13 defeat of Holmes Community College on Nov. 12 in Goodman.

Delta has been led offensively by the power rushing attack of Kelvin Smith (Columbus), who has been an absolute workhorse for the Trojans all season. The freshman bruiser has carried the ball 48 times for 199 yards and a touchdown in the first three games.

Stemarion Edwards (Arcola), a freshman linebacker, has been a force on the defensive side in his rookie campaign. The graduate of nearby Simmons High School has 32 tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks in just three games so far.

Ranger quarterback Michael Hiers continue to lead the Northwest offensive attack with solid efficiency, as he has thrown nine touchdowns to just one interception, and has completed over 70% of his passes. He is 67-95 for 969 yards through four contests.

Desmyn Baker, a sophomore linebacker, has paced the Ranger defense in their four games to this point with his versatility. He has 23 tackles, one sack, one interception, one fumble recovery and has blocked a punt.
