Trojans End Season With No Wins
By Mark H. Stowers
A road trip to Clarksdale was supposed to salvage the season. Winless in eight tries, the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans (0-9, 0-6 MACCC North) had one last shot at glory but were outmanned from the opening kickoff in a 20-7 loss to the Coahoma County Community College Tigers (1-8, 1-5 MACCC North.)
The Tigers took the opening kickoff and put together an eight-play, 73 yard drive that took 3:51 off the first quarter clock. The Tigers' Ahmad Harris caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Jabari Watson and with the extra point led 7-0. Neither team found the end zone again the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Tigers scored on a six-play, 40-yard drive to go up 14-0 with Jamarian Clairborne's 16-yard run. The Trojans missed a field goal near the end of the first half but received the second-half kickoff and responded with a three-play, 40-yard drive led by quarterback Mitchell Davis's five-yard touchdown run. Ceidrick Hunt's PAT cut the Tiger lead to 14-7. Neither team's offense could score again in the third, but the Tigers did miss a field goal attempt.
The rest of the scoring came from two Tiger field goals in the fourth quarter, 33- and 35-yards by Austin Donaldson, for the final 20-7 win.
Offensively, the Tigers put up 20 first downs to the Trojans' eight. The Tigers had 286 yards of offense – 108 passing and 178 rushing. The Trojans totaled 184 yards – 95 passing and 89 rushing. The Tigers punted four times, while the Trojans had six punts with a 38.5-yard average.
The Trojans' Achilles' heel was penalties, as they called for 87 yards, calling back some key offensive gains. The Tigers had only four penalties for 24 yards. Each team had one interception.
The Trojans' Mitchell Davis was 9-for-21 passing for 77 yards and one interception, while Evans Schippers was 5-of-7 for 18 yards.
Jabari Watson was 8-of-15 for the Tigers for 108 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Mitchell Davis and Cayson Williams led the Trojans in rushing with 38 yards each. Davis had six rushing attempts, while Williams had one. For the Tigers, La'Zarious Penn had 18 rushes for 85 yards.
Lacoyrius Branch led the Trojan receivers with one catch for 40 yards while Dewayne Mosley had four catches for 24 yards. Luke Bolin had 56 yards on two catches for the Tigers and Brennan Gibson added 34 yards with three catches.
Branch also led the Trojans' defense with eight solo tackles. Troykee Butler had six total tackles.
The Trojans will get on the recruiting trail as they say goodbye to 23 sophomores.
