Lady Trojans Continue to Pursue Growth
By Neshun Holmes
The Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans faced a tough test on the road Thursday night, falling 79–52 to Pearl River Community College as they continue navigating a challenging conference schedule.
Despite the final score, MDCC had several bright spots throughout the contest. E'kemii Johnson delivered an outstanding all-around performance, leading the Lady Trojans with 28 points, six rebounds, three steals, and one block, consistently attacking on both ends of the floor and keeping MDCC competitive.
Defensively, Aniya Williams provided strong energy and communication, helping organize the team and set the tone with her effort. Makayla Robertson also stood out with her toughness on defense and ability to push the ball in transition, creating opportunities for the Lady Trojans.
The turning point came during a Pearl River run sparked by several consecutive three-pointers from the Wildcats' point guard, Jahanna Wilson. The momentum shift proved difficult for the freshman-heavy MDCC lineup, though Johnson answered throughout the game by trading three-point baskets and keeping the pressure on.
MDCC played a solid first half before undisciplined stretches in the second allowed Pearl River to extend its lead.
"We have a lot of growing and maturing to do," Coach Banks said. "We have to be our own motivation and learn how to play four quarters without giving up. This year, we have several players who are still developing, and it's going to be a growing season for us."
The Lady Trojans showed improvement defensively and continued to compete with high effort, key areas the program looks to build upon as conference play continues.
"We need to learn how to play as a team," a player noted. "Our chemistry isn't there yet, but we're in the process of team building and hopefully can come together to get some wins in conference."
MDCC now turns its focus to its next road matchup at Meridian Community College today, January 20, with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Lady Trojans enter the game with a 6–5 record and will look to continue developing cohesion and consistency moving forward.
